As a psychotherapist, I believe that physical exercise
plays an important role in one’s overall sense of well-being.
As a woman, I have found myself vulnerable when out walking or running
alone. Following a rape in our town’s local park, I found that
many women were fearful to continue their exercise routine in the
park by themselves. What once provided a sense of well-being was now
clouded with anxiety and fear. The feedback provided by some of these
women was that they, themselves, felt “raped” and/or “violated”.
I watched as women stood at the entrance to the park to see if they
could connect with a familiar face to unite for a walk, run etc. It
occurred to me that these women needed a way to reach out to one another
and unite. That is where the concept of “WE”
(women exercising clothing line) began. |

My garments are designed to raise awareness
and take a proactive approach to safe exercise.
“WE” encourage women to utilize the “buddy
system” while exercising.
Research indicates that many sexual assaults/rapes occur when a woman
is engaging in exercise alone. The purpose of my logo, the pink runners
heart on my garments, is to encourage women to “unite”
for a walk, run, etc. Wearing the “WE”
logo sends a message to other women that they can join you. The pink
runners heart also pays tribute to all of those women who have been
assaulted while just attempting to exercise. So.., Look for the pink
heart logo and find a friend, or two, or three and “buddy up”.
20% of the proceeds go into the “Women
wear your heart on your sleeve fund” to
provide counseling and financial support to women who are victims
of sexual assault while engaging in exercise.
